CHAPTER I / PRE-ORDER NOTIFICATIONS OPENWEAR WHAT COMES NEXT.
NOTE 002

Still figuring it out.

Building a clothing brand from outside the fashion industry, learning what matters and letting the direction become clearer as I go.

AFTER. material, colour and garment development board
Development study / Materials, colour and construction ideas. Not final production pieces.

I’m still figuring this out.

Some people who have visited the website more than once may have noticed that things keep moving around. Pages change. Images appear and disappear. Ideas get added and then removed again.

That is because, at the moment, AFTER. is very much a work in progress.

I don’t come from fashion.

This isn’t an industry I have spent twenty years working in, and I’m not going to pretend that I know everything about building a clothing brand.

I’m learning.

I’m researching manufacturers, looking at materials, understanding production, asking questions, studying other brands and trying to work out what makes something feel genuinely considered rather than simply expensive.

Front mark / development study
AFTER. WORTH back print development study
WORTH / back print study

Some ideas work.

Some probably won’t.

Some seem brilliant one evening and considerably less brilliant the following morning.

I think that is probably part of building anything.

The difficult bit is knowing when to explore an idea and when to stop yourself getting carried away with it.

There are very few completely new ideas in fashion. Almost everything has existed in some form before.

So I’m becoming less interested in trying to invent something nobody has ever seen and more interested in why AFTER. exists in the first place.

The intent matters.

I want the clothes to look good without anybody needing to know the story behind them.

But for the person who does connect with that story, I want them to mean a little more.

AFTER. TIME back print and bone wash development study
TIME / Bone. Wording, wash and back print study. Still in development.

Recently I have become particularly interested in materials.

Weight. Texture. Wash. Softness. How something feels when you put it on. How it changes after it has been worn repeatedly. The small details you probably wouldn’t notice from across a room but might appreciate every time you wear it.

I keep coming back to the idea of comfort.

Not just comfortable clothing.

Something familiar.

Something you reach for.

Something that, for whatever reason, feels like yours.

That is where I think AFTER. becomes more interesting to me.

A hoodie is still a hoodie.

I’m not trying to pretend clothing can fix grief, loss, heartbreak, illness, uncertainty or any of the other things people carry.

It can’t.

But objects can hold meaning.

A song can.

A photograph can.

A watch can.

An old jacket can.

Sometimes something completely ordinary becomes connected to a period of your life, a person, a memory or the version of yourself that got through something difficult.

Maybe clothing can do that too.

That is something I want to explore.

At the moment I’m speaking with manufacturers, looking at what is possible and gradually understanding what I want Chapter I to become.

It will probably change again.

The website probably will too.

That isn’t because there is no direction.

It is because the direction is becoming clearer as I learn.

For now, I’m happy letting AFTER. evolve.

Carefully.

One decision at a time.

AFTER.Wear what comes next.
